The Workshop Season Continues

For those of you non-Astangi's who are ready for a workshop of your own, - your weekend has arrived. David Lurey will be here on October 13th and 14th offering two separate workshop sessions. There have been many questions regarding workshops that a beginner yogi could attend - the class on the 14th is the one for you. Of course, all levels are welcome and if you are dealing with any back issues, this is a class that you don't want to miss.

This is just a reminder that David will be here in a few days- for full details and descriptions of the classes just click the link to right for "upcoming workshops".

Keep enjoying everything that October has to offer!

Thanks Bobbi!

For anyone interested in learning more about Astanga, the calming and healing aspects of yoga, or living a yoga lifestyle, Bobby invites you to visit her website at www.befityoga.com

Bobbi, have a safe journey home - we'll be thinking of you every time we open our shoulders, roll over our toes, keep our face up and eyes down, and smile as we enter up-dog.

A Message from Jessica - A Friend of the Breathing Room

As the year draws to an end and I begin to look back over all that we have accomplished over the year, I am filled with a warm delight when I think of all of the people that have come through the doors and shared their practice of yoga within our humble walls. What an amazing year this has been.

To all of the Guest Instructors that have made their way to The Breathing Room to lead workshops - I offer a heart-felt thanks.

Bobbi Misiti - Astanga
David and Sharon - Jivamukti
Jorge and Carolina - Kids Yoga
Mary and Jenna - Partner Yoga
Jane Sleven - Astanga
Jorge Verlenden - Yoga Kids Haiti Relief

It has been an honor to take classes from so many loving and talented yoga instructors. I would like to take a moment to honor the teachers who have been leading us in our yoga practices this year.

Mary Nobel - Vinyasa Flow
Lesley Scotney - Hatha
Jenna Wray Dworken - Astanga
Barbara Price - Power Yoga

These are the teachers that opened The Breathing Room in August 2008. We wish Mary and Lesley best of luck as they take on new adventures outside of Egypt, and are so delighted that Jenna and Barbara will continue to be the roots of our living tree. (That was especially for Barbara's profound love of yoga metaphors)

This has been a remarkable year for growth. We have been able to add more class times and offer more styles of yoga; this we owe to the many new teachers who have joined us as Friends of The Breathing Room.

Yara Raafat - Hatha
Yulia Wind - Vinyasa
Sue McDonough - Vinyasa
Lulwa Bordcosh - Strength and Flexibility
Dev Hueske - Kundalini

Although Yulia has moved on, her time with us was so valuable. She really made her mark in such a short time. For the rest, I'm delighted that everyone will return after the summer to pick up where we left off, each making their own unique mark on our daily yoga practices.

And I couldn't end without giving some special recognition to all of you - the practitioners at The Breathing Room. For your dedication, participation and ongoing acceptance of how things work, (and sometimes don't work) at the studio. We appreciate the loving kindness and patience that you brought with you, and hope that you feel just as much a part of the studio as those of us moving papers around and writing things on websites.

My life has been made richer by knowing you all. Have a safe and blessed summer. Looking forward to seeing everyone again in the Fall.

An interesting article on food ethics and yoga

This article delves into many issues relevant to the Breathing Room, a place where people come for Yoga for a wide variety of reasons. There are also some interesting quotes from the Jivamukti folks:
And in yoga and foodie circles alike, contemplating the awesome significance of every bite taken — its flavors, its implications, its history — often seems to lead to moral judgments about others.

“It’s been one of my struggles,” said Rick Bayless, the Chicago chef, who has been practicing yoga for 15 years, is not a vegetarian and loves pork. “I think that sometimes the yoga community is a little too austere, and it’s hard to talk about what I do with people who believe in eating just what you need to stay alive.”

Morning Classes

The New Year has gotten off to a brilliant start and, with new instructors, come new classes. For those of you who have been yearning for morning yoga - we have something for you. On Tuesdays and Thursdays there will be two morning classes. The classes will be offered back-to-back, the first starting at 8:00 -ending at 9:15 a.m. The second starting at 9:30 - ending at 11:00 a.m. 8:00 - ending at 9:30 a.m. The second starting at 10:00 - ending at 11:15.

We are sure to confuse you with the names of our morning instructors, Lulwa and Yulia, not quite rhyming, but enough to tongue-tie you if you try to say them together. Look for their biographies and class descriptions in the coming days.

We are doing our best to meet the needs of our yoga community as the opportunities to do so arise. If you have any particular desires, send us an email with your ideas or requests and we will do our best to accommodate.

Kundalini Yoga

Relax and Renew With this vigorous, restorative form of yoga.

WHAT IS KUNDALINI: Kundalini Yoga is called the yoga of awareness. It enables one to access and utilize his or her own creative energy. This form of yoga, from the northern regions of India, was introduced and taught by the master of Kundalini, Yogi Bhajan. Practicing Kundalini helps to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity, and purify the bloodstream. The practice combines physical postures (asanas) with breathing techniques (pranayama), hand positions (mudras), sound currents (mantras), and meditation. Kundalini Yoga offers a physical, mental and spiritual program that provides a simple guide to living in health, peace, and harmony.

WHAT TO BRING: As always, there are yoga mats that you are welcome to use at the studio, but since we will be sitting on the floor for most of the class, you may want to bring something soft to sit on. (Like a thick mat or towel.)

WHAT TO WEAR: Anything that is comfortable to stretch in. At the end of the yoga set, we take a long relaxation. Have something that you can cover yourself with to keep warm.

INSTRUCTOR Dev Hueske is a certified instructor of Kundalini Yoga. She began practicing Kundalini in 1996, and in 2000 moved to New Mexico to study with Yogi Bhajan and earn her teacher certification. As an international teacher of yoga and meditation, she has taught yoga classes in the United States, India, and Mexico. Dev has been teaching Kundalini Yoga in Egypt for the past two years.
