January and February Calendars Posted

Please click on the link in the upper right hand corner of this page to see the schedule for January and February. You can also scroll to the bottom of this page to see an embedded weekly schedule.

Many Breathing Room Practitioners have pointed out that the calendar link comes up in Arabic. We've looked for a solution to this...and didn't find one. Essentially, Google has decided that everyone opening one of its pages in Egypt MUST want to read it in Arabic. Other than not using Google products (or learning how to read Arabic), if you have a Google account it is possible to change the default settings (by navigating the Arabic links) and making sure you are logged in to your account before you view the calendar. In any event, the scheduling information itself should always be in English. Just keep in mind that the weekly schedule reads from right to left and starts the week with Sunday.

Have a happy and healthy new year - TBR

December Schedule and Announcements

Season's Greetings from The Breathing Room! We hope that everyone had a peaceful and enjoyable Eid.

December is here and although it is a short month of classes - there is a lot to enjoy. You will find the full calendar of classes by clicking the link to the right.

The studio will be officially closed from Dec. 20th - Jan. 8th. But unofficially, the instructors who are around are offering classes to students who voice an interest in practicing over the holiday break.

If you have a class/instructor that you practice with regularly, check to see if they are offering classes and exchange phone numbers. This way you can contact each other directly.

Another option would be to send us an email with your name, phone number, and the message - "I'm interested in practicing over the holiday, please call me when you are offering classes." We will make sure that the message gets to all instructors offering classes.

The Yoga Hotline will be updated weekly but we will not be posting classes on the blog. (*Note - we had some technical glitches with the hotline last month - apologies for any inconvenience, hopefully we have solved the problem)

Our big event for the month is of course the Jivamukti workshop with David and Sharon. The course is full, but we are taking a look to see if we can fit more mats in the room. If your are interested, DO put your name on the waiting list. There is a good chance that we will be able to involve another five students. We are looking forward to this event and hope to accommodate as many participants as we can.

Thanks for a great 2009! Looking forward to what 2010 has to offer.
May this holiday season be filled with goodness and light.

General Announcements from The Breathing Room

We are pleased to welcome our newest yogina to Cairo - Here is Ramona having, what Jenna titled, "a little morning stretch". I however, am quite confident that she is channeling an Om. We are looking forward to having Jenna back with us in the new year and promise that we will do our best to keep our Ashtanga practice flowing while she's away.

And speaking of Ashtanga... kindly draw your attention to Monday's at 5:00. This time slot is designed for Ashtanga practitioners of all levels. Many have voiced an interest in a beginners Ashtanga class - and so this class will take you through the full opening and closing sequences, introducing the standing and seated poses slowly. There will be a emphasis on the form, focus and intention of each posture and will culminate in the introduction of all of the postures in first series.

For the advanced practitioners, you are invited to join us in the space, turn towards your breath and take the series at your own pace. Mysore is the name of the place in India where Ashtanga was founded. The truest form of Ashtanga is when it is practiced at your own breath/pace. If you are interested in more Mysore sessions, please text message Jessica at 010 629 2684.

And finally - WELCOME BACK BARBARA - You were only gone for less than a month, but you were missed. We're happy to have you home.

We hope that your November is filled with Peace, Health and Happiness,
Love and Light - Us at the Breathing Room

We've got mats! Only a handful, but enough to get some people started. We will leave the mats at the studio in their packaging. You can buy them from any instructor for 70LE. Introducing our newest instructor - Yara

Yara Raafat's passion with Yoga started in the summer of 2001 when she took classes with her teacher Mokash. She went on to become a Yoga instructor in early 2006. Yara teaches a blend of Hatha Yoga, integrating Kundalini into her practice. She believes in the invigorating power that Yoga offers the mind, body and the spirit.

The practice of Hatha Yoga can take many forms. According to Yara, "Hatha is an art of living. By controlling the breath, you recycle your stress into positive energy." The physical postures practiced in these classes stretches your spine, promotes health and increases flexibility.

The Breathing Room recommends Hatha Yoga for people who are looking for a gentle yoga practice that increases flexibility and reduces stress. It's very good for those who are new to yoga or for those who have pre-exiting injuries that requires slower movement.

We are pleased to welcome Yara to our team of instructors at the Breathing Room. Join us this Friday at 5PM.

YOGA ETIQUETTE and FAQs
We all come from different back rounds, whether it be a gym or another yoga studio or neither! Here are some yoga etiquette refreshers;

What to Wear - Clothing should be flexible, non-binding, and breathable, we keep the yoga room warm so avoid wearing heavy sweatpants, etc. Shorts or leggings, and a t-shirt or tank top are popular choices. Avoid socks and baggy clothes.

DO arrive early. Getting to class about 10 minutes early can help you settle in and align your attitude with the purpose of the class. While you're waiting you can practice a pose, do a few stretches, or just sit or lie quietly, breathe, and get centered.

DON'T eat for two or three hours before class. If you practice yoga on a full stomach, you might experience cramps, nausea, or vomiting, especially in twists, deep forward bends, and inversions. Digesting food also takes energy that can make you lethargic.

DO let your teacher know about injuries or conditions that might affect your practice. If you are injured or tired, skip poses you can't or shouldn't do, or try a modified version.

DO create an intention. To help you focus, you might find it helpful to dedicate your practice to a certain intention. This might be to become more aware and understanding, more loving and compassionate, or healthier, stronger, and more skillful. Or it might be for the benefit of a friend, a cause—or even yourself.

DON'T bring pagers or cell phones to class. Leave socializing and business outside the studio, so the peace of the practice is not disturbed.

DO be quiet. It's great to share a class with people you know, but it can be distracting to yourself and others to have an extended or loud conversation.

DO bring a towel or your own mat if you sweat a lot, heat increases odor. If you have had a stressful day, your body releases hormones that cause odor. Sweat from working in (yoga is a work in, not a work out) does not cause odor, it is the heat in the body that is accentuating the odor that was already there. Showering before and after yoga is appreciated. NO PERFUMES OR SCENTED LOTIONS IN CLASS PLEASE. Heat increases these scents as well and many people suffer allergic type reactions to perfumes.

DON'T push it. Instead of trying to go as deeply or completely into a pose as others might be able to do, do what you can without straining or injuring yourself. You'll go farther faster if you take a loving attitude toward yourself and work from where you are, not from where you think you should be.

DON'T enter class late or leave early; it's disruptive to others.

DO take time afterwards to think about what you did in class, so you can retain what you learned. Review the poses you practiced, and note any instructions that particularly made sense. Even if you remember just one thing from each class, you'll soon have a lot of information that can deepen your own personal practice.

Pregnancy - Yoga practice is beneficial during pregnancy, and can ease many of the discomforts involved. However, certain postures are not advisable and, as fetal development proceeds, more postures need to be eliminated. What to practice depends largely on the level of practice of the mother before conception. Experienced students should not try new, challenging, or precarious postures which might endanger mother or fetus. It is a common sense matter.

A news article on the death of Pattabhi Jois, discusses the importance of ashtanga yoga

Yoga pioneer Pattabhi Jois dies
By Richard Warry
BBC News health reporter

Sri K Pattabhi Jois
Jois is credited with founding ashtanga yoga

One of the leading figures in the world yoga community, Sri K Pattabhi Jois, has died at the age of 93.

Jois, from India, was widely considered to be the modern founder of the ashtanga branch of yoga and credited with popularising it in the West.

His many thousands of students include the pop musicians Sting and Madonna, and the actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

Ashtanga yoga is based on synchronising the breath through a progressive series of postures.

It is the most rigorous form of yoga, and its practitioners claim it can produce positive effects on mind and body.

The theory is that it produces intense internal heat, which purifies the muscles and organs, expelling unwanted toxins as well as releasing beneficial hormones and minerals which can nourish the body when the sweat is absorbed back into the skin.

Research institute

Introduced to yoga at a demonstration in 1927 at the age of 12, Jois immersed himself in the discipline, studying under the guru Krishnamacharya who had revived the ancient practice of yoga in the early years of the 20th century.

Jois developed and refined Ashtanga yoga after translating ancient texts on the technique, eventually establishing the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Lakshmipuram in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

In 1964 a Belgian named Andre Van Lysebeth spent two months studying under Jois, and wrote a book which mentioned him and included his address.

This marked the beginning of Westerners travelling to India to study under Jois, who moved his base to Mysore.

In 1975 he visited California, triggering a huge surge in popularity among Americans for asthanga yoga.

He continued to travel the world into his nineties, developing a loyal band of followers.

Jois considered yoga to be a form of mind medicine.

"Ashtanga yoga is helping many people throughout the world to balance the mental, physical and spiritual pressures and stresses posed by the modern world we live in today," he said.

Pierre Bibby, chief executive officer of the British Wheel of Yoga, said: "He was a massive influence on the development of yoga, and greatly respected.

"He did a great deal to broaden the appeal of yoga, and make it more accessible to a Western constituency."

Goodbye Guruji

Today the beloved Sri K Pattabhi Jois passed away. "Guruji" as he was called by his students, was 94 years old. In his long, amazing, productive life he taught the Ashtanga series to millions, either himself or through the teachers he blessed. Although I had always dreamed of going to India, and still do, I never made it there to study with him. However, I have been blessed to study with a very select few that he did bless and I always felt I was in a direct line to his wisdom and light. He was, for lack of a better word, the "founder" of Ashtanga yoga. Before I came to Egypt, one of my teachers, Christine Hoar said "you'll teach yoga when you get there". And knowing that Guruji had told her the same thing, that she should teach, made me feel I was in good company. And so I do teach the series to anyone who wants to learn, to anyone who wants to follow the path that he has so carefully and specifically laid out for us. Although his presence will be missed all over the world, he has truly left a legacy greater than any one person could dream to create.
Namaste,
Jenna

Update from Jenna in Vermont

Hello my fellow yogis! I am writing to you from beautiful Bristol, Vermont in the Green Mountains (although they are more white this time of year!) I am here studying ashtanga with Christine Hoar at Bristol Yoga. Christine is one of the few people in the world to have been given the blessing of Pattabhi Jois to teach ashtanga yoga. Christine is a "teacher's teacher" she was just saying tonight how much she enjoys teaching other teachers. So that's why I'm here! Apart from the lovely inn that is my home this week, and all the other charms that Vermont has to offer, I am learning lots of new assists and I am working directly with Christine on developing a beginner ashtanga class since it seems that is a big request at The Breathing Room. I am hoping to offer an "Ashtanga Basics" class when I get back. It will be an introduction to sun salutes, standing postures, and then a selection of seated postures. Christine taught a class like that this evening and I think it would serve our yoga community very well. I can't pretend to be completely selfless though, I am also here to deepen my own practice, which I think will make me a better teacher as well. Looking forward to sharing what I am learning!
Yoga Joy!

Extra Beginners Class Offered!

Happy New Year! We are now re-opening the doors to The Breathing Room. The Power Yoga starts the day at 9:30am and then at 3:00pm we will begin our first class in the Yoga for Beginners Workshop. There have been a number of requests for an evening beginners class - so for those of you who have shown interest, we are offering a beginners class on Sunday and Tuesday at 6:30 in place of the Ashtanga class that is listed. We will be offering these two classes at the member's rate of 50LE per class.

We have noted the overall interest in a beginning yoga class and will keep that in mind when arranging the schedule in the upcoming week. Please feel comfortable to send us any requests for times or classes; we will always do our best to accommodate the needs of our yoga community.

Congratulations on getting your new year off to a great start.
